BOOK NOOK REVIEWS: The Proudest Blue by Ibtihaj Muhammad

TITLE: The Proudest Blue

AUTHOR: Ibtihaj Muhammad

ILLUSTRATOR: Hatem Aly

PUBLISHER: Little, Brown Books For Young Reaaders, 2019

SYNOPSIS: “With her new backpack and light-up shoes, Faizah knows the first day of school is going to be special. It’s the start of a brand new year and, best of all, it’s her older sister Asiya’s first day of hijab–a hijab of beautiful blue fabric, like the ocean waving to the sky. But not everyone sees hijab as beautiful, and in the face of hurtful, confusing words, Faizah will find new ways to be strong.

Paired with Hatem Aly’s beautiful, whimsical art, Olympic medalist Ibtihaj Muhammad and Morris Award finalist S.K. Ali bring readers an uplifting, universal story of new experiences, the unbreakable bond between siblings, and of being proud of who you are.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THIS BOOK : In a climate of world wide inclusion, it’s nice to have so many books to share other cultures with children who may not be exposed to those ideas otherwise. I have been lucky to have many friends from all over the world, and I love learning about other cultural traditions. Ms. Mohammad helped clear up my misconception over the purpose of the hijab for one of her characters in this touching story. But wearing a lovely blue garment over one’s hair can sometimes bring with it misunderstanding, and teasing, which can result in sadness for the wearer. Illustrator, Hatem Aly, creates lovely watercolor artwork to help young readers understand how important cultural traditions can be. It’s also a chance to learn how a family’s faith and love can allow one girl to be a shining example to her younger sister on how to stand tall in THE PROUDEST BLUE. Definitely a great addition to any library!

Children’s books are a good place to teach children about other cultures. It helps children see the world isn’t too big a place to get to know our neighbors. Understanding our differences and likenesses shows that it really is a small world after all.

I tend to find out there are more similarities than differences in my new found friends.

Thanks for stopping by and come back any time!
