BOOK NOOK REVIEWS: Juneteenth For Mazie by Floyd Cooper

TITLE: Juneteenth For Mazie

AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR: Floyd Cooper

PUBLISHER: Picture Window Books, 2016

SYNOPSIS: “Mazie is ready to celebrate liberty. She is ready to celebrate freedom. She is ready to celebrate a great day in American history. The day her ancestors were no longer slaves. Mazie remembers the struggles and the triumph, as she gets ready to celebrate Juneteenth.”

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THIS BOOK : We lost a bright star this year from the Kidlit world with the passing of author/illustrator Floyd Cooper. But we can ease our grief a little by enjoying a legacy of wonderful stories and vibrant illustrations he left behind. Mr. Cooper had an incredible talent for blending stunning drawings with captivating plots and this one is no exception. Young readers will be able to feel Mazie’s excitement as the countdown begins to the annual celebration of her ancestors’ freedom from the bondage of slavery. Remembering the past will hopefully keep us from repeating the same mistakes in the future! A great addition to any library!
