BOOK NOOK REVIEWS: They Say Blue by Jillian Tamaki

TITLE: They Say Blue

AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR: Jillian Tamaki

PUBLISHER: Abram Books For Young Readers, 2018

SYNOPSIS: In captivating paintings full of movement and transformation, Tamaki follows a young girl through a year or a day as she examines the colors in the world around her. Egg yolks are sunny orange as expected, yet water cupped in her hands isn’t blue like they say. But maybe a blue whale is blue. She doesn’t know, she hasn’t seen one. Playful and philosophical, They Say Blue is a book about color as well as perspective, about the things we can see and the things we can only wonder at.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THIS BOOK :   When I first picked up this book and thumbed through it, I thought it was going to be a simple story about a young girl and the different seasons of the year. And there’s nothing wrong with simple stories written for pure entertainment, but author Jillian Tamaki’s powerful look at one young girl’s view of the world is anything but simple. With whimsical sketches full of vibrant color, Tamaki takes us on an amazing journey as one girl contemplates the true depth of the world around her. A single point of view begins to change as her imagination expands and she comes to see the world around her from a wider perspective. Tamaki’s powerful, yet simple illustrations create a page-turning addition to this award winning tale which makes this reviewer want to go live in THAT world…if just for a little while. A great addition to any library!
