BOOK NOOK REVIEWS: Fat Chance Thanksgiving by Patricia Lakin

TITLE: Fat Chance Thanksgiving

AUTHOR: Patricia Lakin

ILLUSTRATOR: Stacey Schuett

PUBLISHER: Albert Whitman & Company, 2001

SYNOPSIS:

Determined to have a Thanksgiving feast to rival that in the book A Pilgrim Thanksgiving, especially after having to move into a small new apartment after a fire destroyed their first apartment, Carla refuses to take “no” for an answer when her mother says “Fat chance” to her request.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THIS BOOK :  it’s my opinion that Thanksgiving is an overlooked holiday in this country. Halloween is anticipated and celebrated the entire month of October. But as soon as November 1st comes along, Christmas songs fill the air. As if we don’t need to take a moment to focus on a little gratitude and being thankful for what we have. Author Patricia Lakin focuses on all the little things and uncommon chances that bring people together to share food and friendship during Thanksgiving. Like the pilgrims at the first gathering, Carla and her mother go on a grand adventure to a new world (apartment), meeting the indigenous people (new neighbors) and eventually bridge the walls between friend and potential foe. What a great way to teach young readers to reach out a helping hand so that all may benefit! A great addition to any library!
