TITLE: The Whole World’s Inside Nan’s Soup

AUTHOR: Hunter Liquore

ILLUSTRATOR: Vikki Zhang

PUBLISHER: Yeehoo Press, 2021

SYNOPSIS: “There’s something special bubbling in Nanni’s big metal pot. And it smells delicious! What ingredients might be inside? When Nanni lifts the lid on her soup, she reveals the whole world inside: from the seeds that grew into vegetables, to the gardeners who lovingly tended to the plants, to the sun, moon, and stars that shone its light above them. And, of course, no meal is complete without a recipe passed down generations of family, topped and finished with Nanni’s love. ”

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THIS BOOK : When I was a little girl growing up near the bayous of southern Louisiana, my mother would quite often make what Cajuns call gumbo. Walking home in the rain and stepping into a warm home filled with the delicious smell of that thick soup full of whatever odds and ends Mother found from the garden, it was one of my strongest memories of my childhood. When I heard about author Hunter Liquore’s book about another strong woman’s tradition of soup bringing the family together, I knew I had to read it. This story, complete with incredible illustrations, encourage readers to learn more about the world around them and all the people involved in order to make a lovely bowl of soup. And in today’s everchanging world, it’s comforting to know we can look for more cultural similarities than differences on a hot bowl of soup! What a great addition to any library!
