BOOK NOOK REVIEWS: Hurricane by John Rocco

TITLE: Hurricane

AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR: John Rocco

PUBLISHER: Little, Brown, and Company, 2021

SYNOPSIS:

That night the wind roars and rumbles,
like the sound of a thousand waves
pounding the shoreline.

A young boy’s favorite place in the world is the old, splintery neighborhood dock. At this dock the boy can swim, fish, or watch minnows dart between the rocks. But a hurricane is coming…and its violent winds and rain carry with it anything that can float.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THIS BOOK :  I am a fan of Caldecott Honoree, John Rocco. I’ve read his previous books, Blizzard and Blackout, so I was looking forward with great anticipation to being able to read this one. Mr. Rocco has a way of explaining the wrath of Mother Nature to young readers without scaring them. Hurricane also shows how the love of one small child for his favorite place in the world can unite a village and spread love far beyond the damage done by one terrible storm. A wonderful addition to any library!

blizzard

Title:  Blizzard
Author/Illustrator:  John Rocco
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion
Ages: 4-8

Synopsis:

One winter day started to snow,
and it did
                 not
                          stop.
At first it as fun.
But four days later, the snowplows
still hadn’t come,
cabin fever as setting in,
and rations were running low.
Someone had to take action.
Will one intrepid boy be able to triumph over a fearsome BLIZZARD?

Why you should read it:

Author/Illustrator John Rocco has masterfully created a world of snow and ice where one kid can become the neighborhood hero. Detailed artwork takes young readers on a delightful adventure to the local grocery store when a much younger John uses his imagination as an Arctic survivalist to brave the elements as the family’s hot cocoa supply runs low. Does he have what it takes to save his family and the neighborhood from going hungry during the BLIZZARD?
