Now on Tuesdays…at least for the foreseeable future…welcome to Flash Fiction Tuesday. In case you don’t know what flash fiction is, it is an extremely short story (sometimes created in 100 words or less) with a beginning, middle, and an ending.
But in my case, I write flash fiction with an open ending. I allow my readers to draw their own conclusion as to what happens next to the characters of each story. This week’s Flash Fiction is about a universal theme…love…
A Matter of Time
Labored breathing and the machine’s hum breaks the silence of the otherwise sterile hospital room. Breath for breath his matches hers as wrinkled fingers entwine.
A lifetime of memories dance about the room as he waits for some sign she senses his presence.
Their first kiss, that first secret touch, and a promise to love forever play havoc with his mind and he drifts back to his youth. Long summer days when the mere sight of her was enough to rain sunshine on an otherwise dreary day.
But jealousy danced with him back then and soon a misunderstanding turned into regret, lingering between the then and now. Years later, a chance encounter turns into a love reborn and now he wonders how he will live without her. CAN he live without her?
Even when a nurse enters the room, the tomb like silence lingers. Vitals checked and a glancing touch on his shoulder are the only changes in the air, as if the entire universe is waiting for…something.
Slowly, his hand releases hers just long enough to brush hair from her half-closed eyes and he leans in to inhale her scent as he patiently sits wrapped in her love.
So what happens next? Share in the comments what you would like to see happen to my Flash Fiction couple…
