BOOK NOOK REVIEWS: The Welcome Chair by Rosemary Wells

TITLE: The Welcome Chair

AUTHOR: Rosemary Wells

ILLUSTRATOR: Jerry Pinkney

PUBLISHER: Simon & Schuster, 2021

SYNOPSIS: In 1807, Sam Siegbert is born in southern Germany. Sam’s favorite pastime is carpentry, much to his father’s displeasure. His mother says he has a gift from God in his hands. After moving to America, he builds a wooden chair with the word WILLKOMMEN on the back. The chair’s back panel was later marked with welcomes by four generations of the family in four different languages.

After the family lost track of the old chair, the author created a new life for it among new owners from other corners of the world. All the families who loved the chair came to America, escaping religious conformity, natural disasters, tyrannies, war, and superstition. In its lifetime, the rocking chair, with its earliest word WILLKOMMEN, stood for openness, hospitality, and acceptance to all who owned it or rocked safely in its embrace.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THIS BOOK : I’ve always enjoyed meeting people from other cultures and learning about other countries. Combine that with a love of history and author Rosemary Wells’ book The Welcome Chair had to be added to my reading list. This story revolves around one handmade rocking chair made by the son of a Barvarian immigrant and follows that chair’s journey through the pages of time as well as many different hands and cultures to end up as part of a family of refugees from war-torn Syria. Can one beloved rocking chair heal the hearts and spirits of the many families it serves? Readers will find the answer to that question and many more in this heart warming tale woven within the pages of Jerry Pinkney’s wonderful illustrating talent. A great addition to any library!
