BOOK NOOK REVIEWS: Lots Of Latkes, A Hanukkah Story by Sandy Lanton

TITLE: Lots Of Latkes

AUTHOR: Sandy Lanton

ILLUSTRATOR: Vicki Jo Redenbaugh

PUBLISHER:  Kar-Ben Publishing, 2003

SYNOPSIS:

Rivka Leah invites her neighbors to a Hanukkah party, but a series of mishaps causes each of them to bring the same dish– latkes.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THIS BOOK :  During this festive holiday season, I wanted to include a picture book which honored celebrations enjoyed by my Jewish friends. Author, Sandy Lanton, writes an adorable story about one lady making latkes for her friends. She invites them to bring various items to share, but young readers will be amused by the series of mishaps which end in an abundance of potato pancakes. Though I’m not Jewish, I was raised on latkes while growing up around the bayous of southern Louisiana. I KNOW how delicious they are and love the fact this author included a recipe in the back of the book! A lovely addition to any library!

BOOK NOOK REVIEWS: 5 More Sleeps ‘Til Christmas by Jimmy Fallon

TITLE: 5 Sleeps ‘Til Christmas

AUTHOR: Jimmy Fallon

ILLUSTRATOR: Rich Deas

PUBLISHER:  Feiwel and Friends, 2020

SYNOPSIS:

Just 5 more sleeps ’til Christmas!
Can you believe it’s here?
I know that Santa’s coming soon
’cause I’ve been good all year.

Everyone who grew up celebrating Christmas remembers the excitement that built up to the most magical day of the year. But why not make the last week until Christmas more fun by counting how many sleeps until the arrival of Santa and his reindeer?

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THIS BOOK :  I don’t typically read picture books written by “celebrities”. Whether written by the actual person or a ghost writer, I sometimes wonder if their very name prevents a strong story from being created. But I’m thrilled to admit I was definitely wrong about Mr. Fallon’s latest picture book. 5 Sleeps ‘Til Christmas touches on every child’s impatient countdown to Santa’s arrival. All of the holiday things that have to come first when all a child wants is to be able to open presents on Christmas Day. Illustrator, Rich Deas, has created pure picture illustration magic to compliment Mr. Fallon’s holiday story. Parents and young readers alike will love cuddling up to this soon to be new Christmas classic. A great addition to any library!

BOOK NOOK REVIEWS: A Chick ‘N’ Pug Christmas by Jennifer Sattler

TITLE: A Chick ‘n’ Pug Christmas

AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR: Jennifer Sattler

PUBLISHER: Bloomsbury Publishing, 2014

SYNOPSIS:

Pug is ready for the holidays in his extra cute–and extra itchy–Santa suit. Chick wants one just like it . . . until Pug explains how Santa delivers presents to kids everywhere all in one night, and Chick can’t believe his ears. Clearly, Santa Claus is a superhero! And Chick wants to be his fearless sidekick. Spreading holiday cheer is no easy feat, but Chick is ready and willing, even if Pug, of course, would rather nap.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THIS BOOK : I have the greatest admiration for author-illustrators. While my storytelling skills are strong, I am merely a sketch artist with no misconception of my status as a budding “illustrator”. Ms. Sattler’s holiday story is filled with that famous duo, Chick & Pug. Chick is overwhelmed with excitement over the holiday season while all Pug wants is to take another a nap. Teamwork is the word of the day as this dynamic duo spread holiday cheer while they wait for Santa to arrive. A nice addition to any library!

BOOK NOOK REVIEWS: Cowboy Christmas by Rob Sanders

TITLE: Cowboy Christmas

AUTHOR: Rob Sanders

ILLUSTRATOR: John Manders

PUBLISHER: Golden Books, 2012

SYNOPSIS:

Three grizzled cowboys—Dwight, Darryl, and Dub—are stuck out on the range at Christmastime, roping steers and wrestling longhorns. Reminiscing about their childhood Christmases, they try to make the cowboy camp feel festive—and it’s no surprise that a cactus decorated with tin cans, and cows dressed as reindeer, don’t fill them with holiday cheer! But a surprise is in store for the Circle D dudes when Santa pays a visit to the cowboy campfire!

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THIS BOOK : I became friends with author, Rob Sanders, ten years ago just before his picture book, Cowboy Christmas, came out. Moving to Tennessee from Texas, I chuckled when I read about cowpokes, longhorns, and cactus “Christmas trees” as three cowboys attempt to recreate their childhood memories while out on the range. Young readers will be amused by this cute story and whimsical illustrations created by award-winning illustrator, John Manders. A cute addition to any library!

BOOK NOOK REVIEWS: When Santa Came To Stay by Billy Sharff

TITLE: When Santa Came To Stay

AUTHOR: Billy Sharff

ILLUSTRATOR: Eda Kaban

PUBLISHER: Dial Books For Young Readers, 2022

SYNOPSIS:

What happens when your Christmas cookies are too good? Santa comes . . . to stay! At first, it’s fantastic: treats and toys and reindeer flights every day. Then Mrs. Claus arrives. And Baby Claus. And before long, the Easter Bunny and her babies Chuck and Puck and Luck and Duck and . . . you get the picture. By the time the Fourth of July rolls around, everyone’s had a bit too much eggnog in their cereal and confetti in their hair. As one family discovers, maybe the true meaning of Christmas is about more than presents and sweets. And maybe there’s a reason it comes but once a year.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THIS BOOK : Author Billy Sharff’s story of what can happen when Santa overstays his welcome reminds me of an old saying, “Fish and relatives begin to stink after three days!” This comical story about Santa deciding to stay with one family long after the Christmas season was a cute idea at first. But the family soon realizes that one jolly ol’ elf can come with a lot of baggage…like family and in-laws. Elves and the Easter Bunny. Soon the thought of Christmas all year long isn’t so merry and the family devises a way to shoo Santa back where he belongs. A cute addition to any library!

BOOK NOOK REVIEWS: A New Improved Santa by Patricia Rae Wolff

TITLE: A New Improved Santa

AUTHOR: Patricia Rae Wolff

ILLUSTRATOR: Lynn Cravath

PUBLISHER: Orchard Books, 2002

SYNOPSIS:

“The chimneys seemed smaller this year. I must be getting fatter. My clothes are old-fashioned, and my ‘Ho-ho-ho’ is so-so-so boring.”

So begins Santa’s quest for a new, improved self. He gets right to work…slimming down, pumping up, and becoming more fashionable. But do kids really want a yo-dude, skinny, cyber-Santa with spiked hair? Well, he seems to think so…at least at first. But by the time he climbs into his sleigh on Christmas Eve, he has learned that a new, improve Santa is one who is true to himself and to the spirit of Christmas.

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THIS BOOK : Ever since I was a child…and even when my mother was a child and her mother before her…Santa has been that jolly, overweight old man with a white beard, red suit, and who drove a sleigh pulled by reindeer. But what if that isn’t what he looks like for OUR children? Author Patricia Rae Wolff offers many alternatives to St. Nick, including everything from punk rock with bell bottom pants to a cowboy or a dandy in a zoot suit! Illustrator Lynne Cravath’s whimsical illustrations had me chuckling at all the possibilities. Safe to say Santa came to his senses by the end of the book, but young readers will certainly enjoy the ride. A cute addition to any library!
